Conference Overview & Main Themes
Manchester is a city shaped by industrial transformation, migration, and working-class politics. Therefore, it provides the perfect stage to examine the enduring relevance of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological framework. More than forty years after the publication of Distinction, education remains a critical site where power is both reproduced and contested.
Specifically, the 2027 conference focuses on how class, race, and gender intersect within educational systems. Scholars are invited to submit papers that critically engage with Bourdieusian concepts. We welcome proposals exploring field, habitus, capital, and symbolic power to illuminate contemporary forms of stratification, exclusion, and social transformation.
